Seashore Paspalum Field Day to Benefit Turfgrass Research Scheduled, Presented by FTGA, Environmental Turf & University of Florida

Avon Park, FL:  August 20, 2004

An educational field day to benefit Florida turfgrass research is scheduled for Friday, October 8, 2004, at the Emerald Island Turf farm in Avon Park.

The event, “A Seashore Paspalum Field Day,” is presented by the Florida Turf Grass Association, Environmental Turf & the University of Florida. Cost to attend is $10 and includes a barbecue lunch. All proceeds benefit turfgrass research. CEUs will be available. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call: 863-452-6595 for reservations.

To date, the event has been approved for CEUs from the following organizations:

  • GCSAA: .2 credits
  • FNGLA: 2 credits
  • Florida Pesticide Certification Office: 1.5 credits

The field day will include both classroom-style instruction and a hands-on field tour.

Dr. Laurie Trenholm and Dr. Bryan Unruh, turfgrass experts from the University of Florida, will present an educational seminar on Seashore Paspalum, the hottest trend in the turfgrass industry. Seashore Paspalum is a highly salt-tolerant and drought-tolerant turfgrass that requires up to 50 percent less water for irrigation than Bermudagrass, and up to 75 percent less nitrogen for fertilization.

Topics covered in the seminar will include:

  • Update on University of Florida’s latest USGA research on Seashore Paspalum
  • Weed Control in Seashore Paspalum
  • Establishment of Seashore Paspalum
  • Fertilization of Seashore Paspalum

Following the classroom-style presentation, participants will venture out into Emerald Island Turf’s sod farm fields to view up close several varieties of Seashore Paspalum, among them SeaDwarf™ Seashore Paspalum and Aloha™ Seashore Paspalum. Participants will have the opportunity to compare varieties and ask questions.

The event will conclude with a barbecue feast provided by Environmental Turf. Wiley McCall's famous barbecue will be on the menu!

The cost is $10 per person and includes the seminar, field tour and lunch. All proceeds to benefit turfgrass research.

DIRECTIONS TO EVENT:

Take Highway 27 North to Avon Park. Turn Right on Main Street (County Road 64). Head East through town. Pass the high school to 4-Way Stop. Go through 4-Way Stop and Continue East. Go around curve. Continue ahead approximately 4 Miles to DEVCO ROAD. Turn left on DEVCO ROAD. Pass through two stop signs. Continue straight onto a shell surface road. The Farm is approximately 1/4 mile ahead.
