WORLD’S FIRST WALL-TO-WALL SEADWARF™ SEASHORE PASPALUM
GOLF COURSE NAMED IN “TEN BEST NEW PRIVATE GOLF COURSES” BY
TRAVEL & LEISURE GOLF
Naples, Florida (Thursday, February 24,
2005): Hammock Bay Golf & Country
Club in Naples, Florida, the world’s first golf course to be
grassed entirely with SeaDwarf™ Seashore Paspalum from tee-to-green
and in the roughs, was named one of “2004’s Top Ten Best
New Private Golf Courses” by Travel & Leisure Golf magazine
in the January/February 2005 issue.
Travel & Leisure Golf described Hammock Bay, designed by Peter
Jacobsen and Jim Hardy, as “a modern classic.”
Hammock Bay was grassed completely with SeaDwarf™ Seashore
Paspalum, an environmentally friendly turfgrass that is highly salt
tolerant, takes up to 75 percent less nitrogen for fertilization
and up to 50 percent less water for irrigation than bermudagrass.
SeaDwarf™ Seashore Paspalum may be irrigated with just about
any quality water, adapts to varied soil conditions, provides a
bright green color and fast greens with no grain.
Hammock Bay was developed by WCI Communities,
one of Florida’s
largest luxury golf course development companies.
“
It’s good to see that something we worked so hard on is getting
this kind of recognition,” said Lou Conzelmann, regional agronomist
for WCI Communities. “This ranking should make our whole
group very proud and happy to have been a part of the planning
and construction
of Hammock Bay.”
WCI initially chose SeaDwarf™ Seashore
Paspalum as a tee-to-green grass at Hammock Bay because of its
environmentally friendly attributes.
“
The biggest reason we chose SeaDwarf was we knew the water we were
going to use wasn’t the best quality and SeaDwarf would be
able to use the poor quality water,” Conzelmann said.
Conzelmann said he thinks Hammock Bay’s use of SeaDwarf™ Seashore
Paspalum factored into the course’s Top Ten rating.
“
I think the grass plays a big part in the overall quality of the
golf course,” Conzelmann said. “We’re thrilled
with our choice of SeaDwarf because it’s not only a better-suited
grass for the water we use for irrigation, but it turned out to be
a great playing surface for the greens, tees and fairways. It’s
a great looking grass and a great playing surface for golf.”
Wiley McCall is president of Environmental
Turf, the company that markets SeaDwarf™ Seashore
Paspalum and licenses producers to grow the grass worldwide.
“
Working with WCI Communities has been one of the best partnerships we’ve
been involved in,” McCall said. “Being the first developer to use
SeaDwarf 100-percent from tee-to-green and in the rough, they gave us the opportunity
to showcase our grass and prove that it could do what we said it could do.
It’s been more like a partnership than a customer relationship.”
McCall added, “This ranking confirms
what can happen when you put together an excellent development
and design team, a dedicated construction crew, a
talented golf course superintendent and a quality grass.”
